Studies consistently show that taking drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy and heroin, can have major negative consequences for our cognitive functioning and our overall health. After all, these substances are toxic to the brain.

Research has been unable to make a direct link with the use of illicit drugs and the development of diseases that cause dementia.

It has been suggested that taking illicit drugs might influence your lifestyle in different ways,  that then increases your risk of developing dementia.

For example, taking illicit drugs might lead to changes in your blood pressure. Alternatively, taking illicit drugs might lead you to live a more sedentary lifestyle.

Both of these factors might increase your risk of developing dementia.

So, while there is no direct evidence linking illicit drug use to dementia, their use has major ramifications for your physical and mental health, and is best avoided.

Future long-term studies will help determine whether there is a direct link between illicit drug use and the development of dementia.

Testosterone is a sex hormone that’s important for reproduction and development. As men get older, they experience a significant decline in their levels of testosterone.

Some studies have shown that males with dementia have lower levels of testosterone, which has led to claims that lower levels of testosterone might be associated with the development of dementia. However, other studies have shown that there is no difference in testosterone levels between men with and without dementia.

There has yet to be clear evidence that supports a causal link between testosterone level and relative risk of dementia.
